The Dish: Turkey Chili

Jan 18, 2013 at 8:51pm by Vanessa Lachey

Turkey Chili is one of my favorite dishes to make. It's great for those cold winter nights, a potluck dinner, or my husband's personal favorite … Football Sunday! This dish is great so many ways, as a dip with tortilla chips, on hot dogs for a fun lunch, or just in a bowl with a cozy blanket and good movie. I make my chili two different ways. One is complicated because of all the custom seasoning, etc. And then there is THIS one! It's so easy! I love EASY now that I have a new baby in my life. I tend to change up the sauce and meat ratio every time I make it, but below is a detailed account of how I made it recently. The most important part: I always make a HUGE pot to share with company and to have on hand for a few days.

INGREDIENTS:

2 packs of 20oz (1.25lbs) ground lean turkey

2 fresh red peppers

1 onion

2 cans 28oz Crushed Tomatoes in Tomato Puree

1 can 15oz of tomato sauce

1 pack of taco seasoning (yup… this is the easy part!)

2 cans 15oz Kidney Beans *Note: sometimes I use 1 can of Chili Beans and 1 can of Kidney Beans

Olive Oil

shredded cheddar cheese (for garnish)

sour cream (for garnish)

RECIPE:

-Start by putting all the sauces into a large pot over medium heat. I sometimes add 1/2 a pack of "Chili Seasoning" in here. (I told you this was easy!)

-Drain the beans and add them to the sauce

-Dice the onion

-Take out the core of the red peppers, and slice and dice them.

-In a pan add a bit of olive oil on medium heat (approximately a tablespoon), add onion and red pepper. Sauté for a minute. Turn the heat down to med-low and put a lid on it. Stirring occasionally, let the veggies soften. Around 10 mins or so

-Brown both packs of turkey and add the Taco Seasoning according to the directions on the pack. (I do this while the veggies are on the back burner)

-Add the onion/red pepper mixture to the sauce, stir
-Add the seasoned ground turkey to the sauce, stir

-Turn the heat down to low and leave it for a few hours to simmer. The longer the better! But remember to keep checking in and stirring your chili.

-Then, Bon Appetit!!!!

Thank you Vanessa for this great recipe. I made it today and my family, especially my husband, went crazy over it. It was so good. The only changes I did was after adding the meat to the sauce for about 20 minutes, I then transferred it all to the crock pot and cooked it in there for about 3 1/2 hours..This way, I didn't have to worry about stirring it,a nd watching it for a long time.I also added red pepper to it before adding to the crock pot.YUM.:)

Looks delicious! May have to whip some up for the big game! My super easy but very delicious recipe is sausage dip!

      - 1 lb of spicy sausage
      - 1 block of velveeta
      - 1 can of Rotel

Brown the sausage in a skillet, dice the cheese so that it melts, and then drain the sausage. Add the diced cheese, drain the can of Rotel and add it to the skillet on medium until it all melts together. I usually place mine in a crock part afterwards. Its soooo good!

      Hello Vanessa,

I love your website! The turkey chili looks yummy. I would love for you to post the meatball receipe, unless it is a family secret. :) I saw a picture of it on twitter and it looks good. I would like to make it for the Supper Bowl.

I make this exact recipe all the time sans the red peppers. I add a handful of frozen corn for color :)

Here is one of my go to recipes: Chicken Marinara is what I call it
Buy either chicken cutlets or chicken breasts and cut in half to make thinner.
1jar of your favorite pasta sauce
      Sliced mozzarella cheese
      Noodles of choice
      Salt and pepper

Sauté the chicken in a little EVOO then place in an oven safe dish. Place a slice of cheese on each piece of chicken, cover with pasta sauce, then add another slice of cheese on top if you wish. Toss in the oven at 350 degrees until bubbly. Serve over noodles with a simple side like a salad or steamed broccoli.

I usually do four pieces of chicken and only use half a jar of pasta sauce. I often add some sautéed mushrooms to my sauce too. My 5 year old loves his!

I would save a step (and another dirty pan) by sauteing the onion/pepper/turkey together then add the rest into the same pot once the turkey is browned. Just my 2 cents ;) Thanks for sharing your recipe!

That sounds delish! BUT I am gonna share w/you an even EASIER way to make chili! Yes, that's right, I said EASIER! lol..Being that I am a mama of 5 & I read that you said you wanted to have a big family, time is going to become your best friend! lol.. Brown turkey in pan(season w/salt,peper & onion powder, then toss ALL your ingrediants into a big crock pot: tomatoes sauces, meat, beans, diced pepers & onion if u like then, & 1-2 packets of CHILI seasoning depending on how much your making & how spicy u like it! Give it a stir, put on the lids & put on high or low depending on what time u r planning on eating. Next get back to changing diapers, cleaning or catching up on a good book! No extra pots or pans to clean! Easy, fast & most importantly YUMMY!
