We all know the fitness is good for us… We know it can help with a bunch of health conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, obesity and high blood pressure… But what most of us don’t know about how working out is that it gives us a happiness boost, too! (I know some of you are probably sitting there thinking...”Nope, not me!” Remembering how often you’ve driven to the gym in a cranky mood after a long day). However, it’s scientifically proven that fitness, in fact, leads to a greater amount of happiness. So, although it may seem like the last thing you want to do, here are 5 reasons why exercise will put a smile on that pretty face of yours:
- Fitness Leads to Greater Confidence: Working out obviously leads to a more toned, healthy body. When we look good, we feel good. But it’s more than just the physical change in your muscles that help with this confidence boost. Exercising also leads to healthier skin and hair. The sweat released from your pores helps rid of trapped dirt and oils! It also reduces bloat and puffiness, wards of wrinkles and gives your skin an extra boost (which is why you get that post-workout glow)!
- Exercise Releases “Happy” Chemicals: It’s important to note that exercise not only helps us physically, but also emotionally. Working out releases endorphins, which heighten feelings of optimism and satisfaction… A.K.A. they make you happy, as noted so eloquently in the clip below from Legally Blonde:
Elle Woods knew what she was talking about! But seriously, after a stressful day, exercise can help relieve your mind and your body and give you clarity about what you’re dealing with in your life. It’s true! Exercise actually makes people smarter. Prove it to yourself: try working out for a little bit and within the first 15 minutes afterward, do something creative or challenging, and I bet you’ll see a difference in how well you work! - Working Out Fights Depression & Anxiety: Not only does exercise release endorphins, but it also reduces adrenaline and cortisol, which amplify feelings of anxiety, stress and tension. Warming up your body temperature during a good workout actually has a calming effect on your nerves. Not to mention, taking time for yourself to let your mind focus on the exercise, rather than those aspects of your life that are bringing you down, can be effective in fighting depression. Fun fact…Bosses who don’t find time for fitness tend to be more stressed and lash out at their employees, rather than bosses who do find the time to exercise. (Don’t be the grumpy boss! Or employee!)
- Fitness CAN Be Fun: Turn your workout into a social activity… Take a zumba class with your girlfriends, go to the gym with your hubby, take your baby for a walk in the park—do anything that will increase your heart rate, get you sweating and make it enjoyable! Often, fitness is categorized as boring, painful and hard. Don’t let it be. Do something that you enjoy and that you look forward to. You’ll see a difference in yourself, your mind and your body!
- Exercising Helps with Success: Exercising is the perfect way to drive your ambition. There’s no better feeling than setting a goal and fulfilling it, and working out can get you there. Set a weight goal, make a plan to get toned by a special occasion, establish a deadline for when you hope to see a change…and watch as you begin achieving your aspirations. This will lead to a greater feeling of success in your life, and in turn, will help you attain a better quality of life overall.
So there you have it, laid out right in front of you! Fitness is a key factor in your happiness!
Now tell me, how has exercising helped you? What changes have you seen after your workouts?
Let me know in the comments below!
Xx, Vanessa
PS. If you’re struggling with the Baby Blues like I was, perhaps exercise can help you, too! It was definitely a positive for me.

hi there thanks for those inspirational word about exercising. ya ialso know the feeling. my first pregnancy had an 5lb. 12oz baby boy bac in 1996, now turning 17, then bac in 2000 i had 7lb 3oz baby girl just turned 12, and last year i had another 7 lb. 7oz baby girl almost going to turn 1 yrs. old. i agree execise relieves stress and it also makes you feel better. but to tell you the truth i've been trying to get the energy to stat doing execise but after getting up with my daughter 3 or 4 times a night and plus with my throid problem i wake so tired the next day, and i have energy to do anything. i've been watching what i eat but i know thats not enough. but i'm going to try and start doing exercises. thanks Vanessa -

Hi Vanessa,
I first want to say you are so beautiful and I love you and Nick together and congrats on the baby!! I love this post on how exercise makes you happy! I am a very busy woman, I work 9-5 for the State of Connecticut and its a very stressful job. And I am taking two night classes. At the end of the day the last thing I want to do is go to the gym (Which we have one at my job by the way) But I have fallen into a huge depression, and it's because (I think) I have gained a considerably amount of weight. (Well I gained the weight because of becoming depressed I should say) I use to be a "gym rat" I would work all day and then go to the gym at night for 2 hours and I loved it. I loved how my body transformed and having depression makes you not want to do anything, so it's been very hard to start up again but I just want to say your post made me happy and it made me think back to how happy, confident, successful, outgoing, etc, I used to be and I am going to make myself start doing something again, It's not like I don't know what to do. I could probably train someone. It's just a matter of getting up to do it, and you put a smile on my face and made me feel like there is some glimmer of hope in my future! Sounds corny or ridiculous but it's true!!! Thanks for opening up your life to us. -
I need to seriously PUSH myself! I'm not a morning person... and working out after an entire day of work is a challenge! All I want to do is go home and relax with my fiance, but damn! Our wedding is in 80 days!! Need to look great in the dress! But I also realize exercise needs to be constant, not just for special events/occasions. Thanks for this motivation booster! :) -
I love to exercise i find if i mix it up and don't do the same thing everyday it's more funer! I also like the feeling of being able to wear smaller sizes in clothing makes me feel like i've accomplished something for myself! -
I love to exercise b/c it boost my self-esteem and helps me to distress. I'm in school so I need that time to basically push my stress out of me. I love doing Jillian Michaels and also hitting the gym. I also agree to make work outs fun. I love sports and I play tennis with my boyfriend so we can mix our work outs up a bit. :) -
I definitely agree that exercise helps with our mental state also. I've always like to take about hour walks it also gives me time to reflect and think about life. Its a great stress reliever. I am able to take daily walks again being that I just moved back to California a year and half ago and the weather is mostly always nice -

LOVE the Legally Blonde clip! That's exactly what I thought of when I started reading this! -
My husband and I work out together. He actually gets home later than I do everyday from work and instead of having to jump right back into the car to go the gym we converted half of our garage into a gym. It's nothing fancy but it does the job and we get to catch up and talk about our day while we work out. We encourage each other when one of us does not feel like working out and it makes a huge difference in the way we feel! On the days we do not work out we take our doggies for a long walk. -
I definitely agree with this post! I have been exercising regularly 6-7 days a week for the past 2 years and not only have I noticed a physical change but I have noticed an emotional one as well. Friends always ask me how and why I'm always so happy and in a good mood! I credit it to working out and just feeling good about myself! Eating right also weighs heavily on this too!
Thanks for this post! It was great! -
How right you are. I work out 3 times a week, after work, with a trainer. I walk into the gym cranky and agitated but after an hour of cardo, muscle toning and core work, I leave relaxed and with a smile on my face.
