Baking for a Cause with Nestle: Salted Chocolate Chunk Cookies

unnamed-resized

Recently, I partnered with Nestlé Toll House for their #BakeSomeGood campaign. Nestlé Toll House has enlisted a team of six bakers to help them bake the world a better place; to challenge one another to do more, think bigger, and let acts of good speak louder than words. For 100 days, the Toll House bakers will be going out into the community to surprise and delight the underappreciated, celebrate moments big and small, and simply to say thank you to those who don’t hear it enough.

As a Mama of two (soon to be three, ah!!), I try not to let a day go by without teaching my little ones something new. Whether that’s the lesson of sharing with others, or even simply remembering to say “please” and “thank you”. With the holiday season officially here, the time for sharing, giving and spreading cheer is upon us. There are so many ways to teach our kids to give back to the community nowadays, and I think it is SO important that my children grow up learning the value of lending a hand to others. Not to mention that there are TONS of fun ways to do so!

This season in the Lachey house, we are gathering in the kitchen to bake yummy goodies with our favorite Nestlé Toll House recipes and putting them in little baggies to give back to members of our community or cheer up a friend who needs a smile. The message that this campaign teaches my kids is really important to me. Not only does it give us great family time doing an activity we love together, but we also feel so connected to our community when we bake something to share with others.

So, to give you a little baking inspiration, I’m sharing my go-to Salted Chocolate Chunk Cookie recipe below. These are delicious and TOTALLY satisfy my pregnancy cravings lately—I’m all about those salty & sweet flavors! Plus, it’s a great recipe to cook up with your family. Enjoy!

Salted Chocolate Chunk Cookies

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Bake Time: 10 to 12 minutes
Level: Easy

Ingredients:

  • 1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon Maldon sea salt
  • ½ cup butter
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla or almond extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 (11.5-oz.) bag NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chunks, divided

Preparation:

STIR together flour, baking soda and salt in a large bowl.

HEAT butter in the microwave in a medium bowl for 40 seconds or until it’s almost melted. Add sugars and beat until well blended. Beat in extract and egg. Add to dry ingredients and beat just until mixed. Stir in 3/4 of the chocolate chunks.

PREHEAT oven to 350°F. Grease 2 large baking sheets or line with parchment paper.

SCOOP dough using a slightly mounded small ice cream scoop onto baking sheets. Press remaining chocolate chunks into the surface of the cookies and sprinkle lightly with sea salt.

BAKE for 10 to 12 minutes or until the cookie center feels set when gently touched and is very lightly browned on the edges. Cool completely on baking sheets. Store in an airtight container.

If you love baking and giving back, I highly recommend getting your kids or loved ones in the kitchen with you on a weekend afternoon to whip up delicious cookies, cakes, brownies or any other sweet desserts. Then, give your treats to a charity or group that is near and dear to your heart, and watch the amazing learning experience it will have on your little ones. Some suggestions would be taking the cookies to your local police or fire station, to military families, or simply to your kids’ teachers if they are in school already. The emotional connection and gratitude you receive is priceless and contagious! The emotional connection and gratitude you receive is priceless and contagious!
